Optical character
Sony's entry-level full-frame fifty is a simple six-element double-gauss design with one aspherical element. Its job is to give A7-series owners a small, cheap f/1.8 standard lens for portraits, low light and shallow depth of field without spending G-lens money.
Optically it is soft and low in contrast wide open, then sharpens well by f/2.8 to f/4. Bokeh from the 7 rounded blades is acceptable but can look busy. The weak point is focusing: a DC motor moves the whole optical block, which is slow, audible and prone to hunting in low light.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers agree that image quality is respectable once stopped down, with good centre sharpness from f/2.8 and low distortion. Wide open there is visible glow, longitudinal colour fringing and strong vignetting, and the corners lag behind the centre.
Autofocus is the consistent criticism: it is slower and noisier than almost every other current Sony lens, struggles in dim light and is poorly suited to video. Most testers recommend it only as a budget starter and suggest third-party options such as the Samyang, Viltrox or Sony's own compact G primes if the budget stretches.
Owner sentiment
Owners like the price, light weight and the background blur it adds over kit zooms. Many treat it as their first prime and are happy with stopped-down results for travel and family photos.
Common complaints are buzzing, slow AF, focus hunting indoors and the cheap plastic feel. Several owners mention moving on to the FE 50mm F2.5 G or third-party fifties after a year or two.
