Optical character

The FE 50mm F1.4 GM brings most of the F1.2 GM's performance to a lens that weighs 516g, about two-thirds as much. Two XA elements and one ED element keep it sharp across the frame wide open, and Nano AR Coating II and a fluorine front coating handle flare and smudges.

Rendering is smooth and modern, with soft transitions and round highlights from the 11-blade aperture. Two XD linear motors focus quickly and quietly, and the lens shares the GM control set: aperture ring with de-click switch, two focus-hold buttons and an AF/MF switch.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers placed it among the sharpest 50mm f/1.4 lenses available, with very good corners wide open and excellent results by f/2.8. Longitudinal colour fringing and coma are well controlled, autofocus is fast and accurate, and focus breathing is low enough for video work.

The main reservations are price against strong third-party f/1.4 fifties, some vignetting wide open, and bokeh that a few testers rated slightly less smooth than the F1.2 GM's. Build is considered excellent, though much of the barrel is engineering plastic over a metal mount.

Owner sentiment

Owners call it the sensible G Master 50: nearly as good as the F1.2 for much less weight and money. Portrait and wedding shooters praise the AF hit rate wide open and the clean rendering.

Complaints are mainly about the price, the fact that it is not much smaller than third-party alternatives, and occasional cat's-eye highlights toward the corners at f/1.4. A few users find the aperture ring's grip a little shallow.
