Optical character
The FE 20mm F1.8 G is one of Sony's best-value primes: a fast, light ultra-wide that is sharp to the corners and takes normal 67mm filters. Two advanced aspherical elements and three ED elements keep it crisp and largely free of colour fringing, and coma is well controlled for astrophotography.
It has the full G-prime control set: an aperture ring with click switch, a focus-hold button, an AF/MF switch and dust and moisture resistance. Two XD linear motors make focus fast and silent, and the 0.18m close focus allows dramatic foreground-heavy compositions.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rate it among the sharpest 20mm lenses for any mirrorless system, with good corner performance from f/1.8 and very good by f/2.8. Distortion and lateral colour are low, flare resistance is good, and coma is mild enough for night-sky work wide open.
Criticisms are minor: some vignetting at f/1.8, unremarkable sun stars, and focus breathing that was more noticeable than Sony's newer designs. It is consistently called better value than most rivals in its class.
Owner sentiment
Owners use it for landscapes, astro, interiors, travel and vlogging, and many say it replaced a 16-35mm zoom for most of their wide work. The combination of f/1.8, filter threads and 373g is what sells it.
Complaints are few: the hood is large, a handful of owners mention slight decentering on early samples, and some find 20mm too wide for everyday street use.
