Optical character

Sony's 14mm G Master packs an f/1.8 ultra-wide into a 460g body that is smaller than most 16-35mm zooms. Two XA elements, one Super ED and two ED elements keep the corners clean and coma low, which is why it has become a default choice for night-sky and Milky Way work on Sony bodies.

It is a practical lens as well as a fast one. The aperture ring has a click switch, there is a customisable focus-hold button, and two XD linear motors drive focus quickly and silently. The bulbous front element rules out screw-in filters, but a rear holder takes cut sheet filters.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it very sharp from f/1.8, with corners that hold up well for a 14mm at full aperture and coma control that suits astrophotography without stopping down. Distortion is low after correction, and flare resistance is good for a lens with such a curved front element.

The usual caveats are strong uncorrected vignetting wide open and the lack of front filter threads, which matters to landscape shooters who use ND and graduated filters. Some testers point out that sun stars are less defined than on some rivals, and that the price sits well above third-party f/1.8 and f/2.8 ultra-wides.

Owner sentiment

Owners praise the size above all: it fits in a small bag next to a standard zoom, and many sold heavier 14mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 lenses to buy it. Astro shooters report pinpoint stars into the corners and appreciate the focus-hold button for locking infinity.

Complaints centre on filters. The rear sheet holder is fiddly in the field and third-party front-filter systems are bulky. A few owners note that the fixed hood makes the front element easy to smudge and hard to clean quickly.
