The mirrorless 85 Art cut almost half the weight of Sigma's DSLR-era 85/1.4 Art, down to 625g, with no loss in sharpness. Five SLD elements keep purple and green fringing around backlit hair under control, which is a common weak spot for fast portrait lenses.
Wide open it is crisp at the focus plane, and skin and backgrounds fall off gently with smooth, mostly clean bokeh. It is a portrait lens built to be carried all day.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers place its sharpness on a par with Sony's FE 85mm F1.4 GM and slightly ahead in the corners at f/1.4. Longitudinal CA control is singled out as excellent, and AF is reliable with Eye-AF.
Weaker points are some optical vignetting at f/1.4, cat's-eye highlights toward the frame edges, and slightly busier bokeh than the GM in high-frequency foliage.
