Optical character
The 24mm F1.4 was one of the first Art primes, and it brought f/1.4 at 24mm for well under first-party prices. Three FLD and four SLD elements handle colour, and aspherical elements placed toward the rear target sagittal coma, which made it a popular choice for night-sky and city-light work.
On Sony E it is the SLR design with a longer barrel: 116.2mm and 740g, with a 77mm filter thread and a petal hood. Close focus at 25cm gives a 1:5.3 ratio for tight environmental shots. It focuses with an HSM ring motor and has no aperture ring.
Reviewer consensus
Testers found it sharp in the centre at f/1.4, with corners lagging until f/2.8 and some field curvature. Coma control is good but not class-leading, and vignetting is noticeable wide open. Bokeh is smooth for a wide angle.
On mirrorless bodies the focusing accuracy issues reported on DSLRs largely disappear, but the HSM motor is slower and noisier than native designs. Reviewers also note it has been overtaken by lighter mirrorless 24mm f/1.4 lenses.
Owner sentiment
Owners describe it as good value for astro, weddings and events, and praise its rendering and the 77mm filter thread that many wide f/1.4 lenses lack. The build feels solid.
Complaints are weight on small bodies, occasional AF misses in low light, and purple fringing on high-contrast edges at f/1.4. Several owners replaced it with Sigma's 24mm F1.4 DG DN when that arrived.
