Optical character

This is the least expensive full-featured tilt-shift lens for full frame: ±8.5 degrees of tilt and ±12mm of shift, with the tilt and shift axes independently rotatable in 30-degree click steps. It lets architecture photographers keep verticals straight in camera and lets landscape and product shooters swing the plane of focus.

The optics, with two ED and two aspherical elements, are sharp in the centre and good at the edges even with movements applied, and colour fringing is very well controlled. It is entirely manual, including a stop-down aperture, and the Sony E version is the DSLR design with an adapter section, so it is long and heavy.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate the optics highly for the money: very good central sharpness, good edges, excellent chromatic aberration control, moderate distortion and low vignetting without movements. Several conclude that it gets close to brand-name tilt-shift lenses optically at a fraction of the price.

The mechanics draw the criticism. Knobs and locks feel less precise than Canon or Nikon designs, early copies showed play and misaligned tilt zero points, and flare resistance against bright light is weak.

Owner sentiment

Architecture and real-estate shooters say it pays for itself quickly and that the shift alone justifies the purchase. On Sony bodies, live view with magnification makes accurate manual focus with tilt much easier than through a DSLR finder.

Complaints centre on build: stiff or loose knobs, tilt that does not sit exactly at zero on some copies, and a large 82mm front. The lack of contacts means no EXIF, and the aperture must be stopped down manually.
