Optical character

The second Samyang zoom co-developed with Schneider-Kreuznach trims the classic 24-70mm to 24-60mm to get a constant f/2.8 zoom down to 494g and a 72mm filter thread. It is meant as a light everyday and travel standard, and pairs with the 14-24mm and 60-180mm as Samyang's compact zoom system.

It has 14 elements in 11 groups, including three aspherical, three high-refractive and two ED elements. Close focus is 0.18m at 24mm for 0.27x magnification, which is useful for food and detail shots. The barrel is aluminium with weather sealing, a water- and oil-repellent front coating, a custom button, and a USB-C port for firmware.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate centre sharpness as good throughout the range, with low lateral colour, little longitudinal fringing and no real spherical aberration problems. Autofocus is quiet and fast. Its edges near maximum aperture lag behind, and it is a step behind Sigma's 28-70mm DG DN and Tamron's 28-75mm G2 overall.

As with the 14-24mm, the uncorrected files show heavy distortion and strong vignetting on full frame, and flare resistance is weak. Most testers still conclude that the price, size and the 24mm wide end give it a slightly better price-to-performance ratio than its 28mm-start rivals.

Owner sentiment

Owners like it as a walk-around lens on compact bodies such as the A7C series, and many say they do not miss the 60-70mm range. The close focus at 24mm and the light weight come up often in positive comments.

The common complaints concern soft corners wide open, flare in backlit scenes, and dependence on in-camera or software profiles to clean up distortion. Some buyers find the 60mm long end limiting for portraits.
