Optical character

The AF 16mm F2.8 P FE is the wide end of Samyang's Prima line, aimed at travel, vlogging and everyday landscape shooting. It weighs 207g, takes ordinary 62mm filters, and focuses down to 0.12m for an unusually high 0.33x magnification for an ultra-wide, enough for close-up shots with lots of background context.

The Prima lenses drop Samyang's red ring and use a high-strength engineering plastic barrel. The 16mm adds an AF/MF switch and a USB-C port in the mount for firmware updates, and Samyang rates its dust resistance at IP5 based on internal testing. Its optical formula is simple, at 8 elements including three ED glasses.

Reviewer consensus

Early tests describe a sharp centre from f/2.8, with the borders and corners needing f/5.6 to f/8 to catch up, and noticeable vignetting and distortion that rely on in-camera or raw profile correction. That is typical for a light, inexpensive 16mm, and the 0.33x close focus earns it more praise than the optics alone would.

The linear STM autofocus is quiet and smooth enough for video and gimbal work. It is not a fast-action lens, but at 16mm that rarely matters. The main question reviewers raise is whether it is worth the small premium over Samyang's older AF 18mm F2.8, and most point to the wider view, the switch, the sealing and the better close focus.

Owner sentiment

Buyers like how light it is on small bodies and gimbals, and that it takes standard 62mm filters, unlike most ultra-wides. The close-focus ability gets frequent mention for food, product and vlog shots.

Since it is a recent lens, owner feedback is still thin. Early comments mention plastic build that feels lighter than metal lenses and the usual need for profile correction of vignetting.
