Optical character

Samyang's first autofocus wide-angle was, at launch, the widest AF rectilinear prime for Sony full frame, and it is still one of the cheapest ways to get 14mm with autofocus. It is built for landscapes, interiors and night skies, with three aspherical and two ED elements in a 14-element design and a built-in petal hood.

The metal barrel feels sturdier than the later Tiny-series lenses, but at 500g it is not small. The bulbous front element rules out screw-in filters, and the lens has no buttons or switches, only a by-wire focus ring. Samyang's Lens Station dock allows firmware updates and focus calibration.

Reviewer consensus

Tests agree that the centre is sharp from f/2.8 but the outer field stays soft until about f/8, which limits it for wide-open astrophotography on high-resolution bodies. Raw files show around 3.8% barrel distortion and over 2 EV of corner shading at f/2.8; both correct cleanly with profiles, and lateral CA is moderate.

Build quality and the price-to-performance ratio get consistently good marks. Autofocus is described as reasonably quick and quiet for a lens where focus rarely needs to move. Faster or sharper alternatives, such as Sigma's 14mm f/1.8 Art or Laowa's manual 15mm f/2, cost more or are much larger.

Owner sentiment

Owners mostly use it for travel, real estate and stopped-down landscapes and value having autofocus and EXIF at 14mm for the money. The solid metal feel and the compact size compared with DSLR-era 14mm lenses come up often.

Common complaints are soft corners wide open, copy-to-copy variation in centring, and the lack of a filter thread. Some early owners reported AF quirks that later firmware updates fixed.
