Optical character

The Z-mount Nokton 75mm F1.5 is a compact fast portrait lens: 530g and 76mm long, with a seven-element design using one aspherical and three anomalous partial dispersion elements. The 75mm focal length plus f/1.5 gives strong subject separation at comfortable working distances, and it focuses down to 0.5m (1:4.8).

Wide open it renders with a slight glow and soft, round highlights from 12 blades; stopped down it becomes crisp, and the unusual f/32 minimum aperture allows long exposures. Made under licence from Nikon, it has electronic contacts that pass EXIF, enable 3-axis in-body stabilisation and support peaking, the focus-point colour change and magnification on Z bodies.

Reviewer consensus

The optical design descends from Voigtländer's VM 75mm F1.5, which reviewers found reasonably sharp in the centre at f/1.5 with some glow and astigmatism toward the edges, improving clearly at f/2 and very good by f/2.8. Close-range performance is a strength, which suits head-and-shoulders portraits.

Bokeh is praised as smooth with rich colour and contrast, and the lens is regarded as a good-value alternative to larger f/1.4 and f/1.2 85mm lenses on Nikon Z. Lateral colour and some fringing on backlit edges are the main optical weak points noted.

Owner sentiment

Nikon Z owners like how small and light it is for a fast short telephoto and describe the colour and contrast as rich. Many use it for portraits and event candids where the 85mm f/1.2 S would be bulky, and value the focus-confirmation aids the electronic contacts enable.

Common complaints are softness at f/1.5 in the corners, the lack of a de-click option for video, and the difficulty of nailing focus wide open on moving subjects without autofocus.
