Optical character
Tamron's first 12mm full-frame zoom is a fast, internally zooming ultra-wide aimed at landscape, architecture and astro work. It has a fixed petal hood and a bulbous front element, so it takes rear gel filters instead of screw-in ones. At 585g in Nikon Z mount it is light for a 12-20mm f/2.8, and it reaches 2mm wider than Nikon's own 14-24mm f/2.8 S.
The optics include an XGM element, Tamron's large molded asphere, along with three GM, one XLD and three LD elements. The AX coating on the strongly curved front elements is meant to keep flare in check. Where the Sony version has an aperture ring, the Z version has a control ring that can be assigned to aperture or exposure compensation, with a click on/off switch and a control lock switch. There is also a zoom lock for 12mm and 20mm, an MF lock, a custom switch, and a USB-C port for TAMRON Lens Utility. The 12-blade diaphragm gives 12-point sunstars.
Reviewer consensus
Early reviews find centre sharpness strong from f/2.8 across the range. The corners at 12mm improve noticeably by f/4 to f/5.6, which is normal for this class. The VXD motor focuses quickly and quietly, and flare control is good for a lens with such a curved front element. The 12-blade aperture gets frequent mention for its clean, many-pointed sunstars.
The practical criticisms concern the format, not the optics. Without front filters, ND and polariser users need the rear holder or an aftermarket system. Distortion and vignetting at 12mm also depend on in-camera or raw-converter correction, which Z bodies apply automatically. Testing is still limited because the Z version has only been on sale since late August 2026.
Owner sentiment
Early Z owners like that it goes wider than any Nikon f/2.8 zoom, the 12mm-to-20mm range for travel, and the weight compared with other 12mm f/2.8 zooms. Astro shooters value the MF lock and the f/2.8 aperture at 12mm, and the clickless control ring suits video.
Some see the zoom range as narrow and miss front filters. Others are waiting on longer-term reports on coma and field curvature before replacing older ultra-wides. Only rear gel filters fit, so a polariser is not practical.
