Optical character

Nikon's S-Line ultra-wide zoom is the mirrorless successor to the famous AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G, and it is much smaller: 650g and 124.5mm, against about 1kg for the DSLR lens. Unlike the old design, it takes filters: the supplied HB-97 hood accepts 112mm screw-in filters, and a rear slot holds cut gel filters.

Four ED and three aspherical elements give crisp corners and well-controlled distortion, while Nano Crystal and ARNEO coatings keep flare low for a lens with a bulbous front element. Like other S-Line zooms it has an OLED information panel, a DISP button, an L-Fn button and a quiet control ring, plus full weather sealing and a fluorine-coated front element.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate it among the best ultra-wide zooms on any system. It is sharp in the centre at f/2.8 throughout the range, corners are very good by f/4, and coma is well controlled, which makes it popular for astrophotography. Lateral colour and distortion are low after profile correction.

Flare resistance is good for such a curved front element, though the sun in frame can still produce some ghosts. Autofocus is fast and silent. The main drawbacks are the 112mm filters, which are expensive and add bulk, and a price that is high next to Nikon's own 14-30mm f/4 S.

Owner sentiment

Owners praise the size and weight compared with the F-mount version and say it is the ultra-wide they leave on for landscapes, architecture and night sky work. The ability to use screw-in filters with the hood is a frequently cited reason for choosing it over the 14-30mm f/4.

Common complaints are the cost of 112mm filters, the need to keep the hood on to use them, and vulnerability of the exposed front element. Some users note mild vignetting at f/2.8 and that the OLED panel is of limited use day to day.
