Optical character

The 24-50mm f/4-6.3 launched with the Z5 as the smallest and lightest full-frame zoom of its time: 195g and 51mm long when retracted. It is a kit lens that turns a full-frame Z body into something close to a compact camera, with a short 24-50mm range aimed at everyday, family and travel shooting.

The optics are better than the price suggests, with two ED elements controlling colour fringing. The f/6.3 long end and the need to unlock the collapsible barrel before shooting are the costs of the size. It focuses to 0.35m at every focal length, and Nikon still added dust and drip resistance and a customisable control ring.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find the centre sharp from wide open and the corners weaker, especially at 24mm, improving when stopped down a stop or two. Distortion and vignetting are strong before in-camera correction. Chromatic aberration is low.

Testers accept the short range and slow aperture as the cost of the size, but several say a 24-70 or 24-120 is the more versatile buy if size is not the priority. AF is quiet but can be a little sluggish at times.

Owner sentiment

Owners mostly bought it in a kit and value how it lets a Z5 or Z6-series body fit in a small bag or jacket pocket. Many say it outperformed their expectations for a kit zoom.

The complaints are the limited 50mm reach, f/6.3 indoors, and having to extend the lens before every shot. Some upgrade to the 24-70 f/4 S or 24-120 f/4 S once they want more range or speed.
