Optical character

The 17-28mm f/2.8 is Nikon's affordable fast wide zoom: f/2.8 throughout, 450g and 67mm filters, at about half the price of the 14-24mm f/2.8 S. Its optics derive from Tamron's 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD, re-housed in Nikon's satin-finish barrel with a control ring and Z-mount electronics.

The zoom is internal, so the length never changes, which keeps it balanced on gimbals. It focuses to 0.19m at 17mm for close, exaggerated-perspective shots, and suits vlogging, interiors, street work and starry skies where f/4 would not be enough.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find it sharp in the centre from f/2.8 across the range, with corners that are softer wide open at 17mm but improve noticeably by f/5.6. Uncorrected distortion and vignetting are significant at 17mm and are left to the camera profile. Chromatic aberration is well controlled.

Testers treat it as a strong value pick rather than an S-Line rival. The 14-24 f/2.8 S is wider and more consistent edge to edge, and some point out that 17mm is not especially wide for an ultra-wide zoom. Coma at the frame edges is moderate for astrophotography.

Owner sentiment

Owners like the f/2.8 speed in a small, light lens, its common 67mm filter size, and that it shares a filter size with the 28-75mm f/2.8, which makes a compact two-lens kit. Video shooters say focus is quiet and breathing is low.

Complaints are mostly about corner softness wide open at 17mm, the strong distortion correction, and the lack of an L-Fn button or focus-mode switch on the barrel.
