Optical character

The 100mm f/2.8 was Laowa's first apochromatic 2:1 macro that also focuses to infinity, and it doubles as a short telephoto. Two ED elements give it apochromatic correction, so bokeh fringing is very low even at f/2.8.

The Nikon Z version keeps the DSLR-era optics and is built out to the short mirrorless flange, so like the Sony FE and Canon RF versions it measures about 155mm, against 125mm for the Nikon F original. It has no electronic contacts: the aperture is set on a manual ring, so there is no EXIF. In exchange it gets a 13-blade diaphragm, against 7 on Nikon F, and that gives it the roundest highlights of the family.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers report very high sharpness from f/2.8 across the frame, with f/4–f/8 the best range. Bokeh fringing is almost absent, longitudinal CA does not grow at close range, distortion is low, and the overall rendering is pleasant. At its price it was widely recommended for anyone who does not need autofocus.

Vignetting wide open is the main optical weakness. Lateral CA is moderate rather than zero, and bokeh on the 7-blade Nikon F version was criticised. The 13-blade mirrorless versions, Nikon Z included, avoid that problem.

Owner sentiment

Owners like getting 2x magnification and APO-level colour correction for less than a first-party 1x macro, and the extra working distance over the 58mm and 90mm is appreciated for insects. The build is solid and the focus ring smooth with a long throw.

Mirrorless users mention the length and front-heaviness of the 155mm barrel, the lack of EXIF and in-camera aperture control, and the darker viewfinder when stopped down for macro work. Some Z owners weigh it against Nikon's autofocus Z MC 105mm, which stops at 1:1 but costs about twice as much.
