Optical character

7Artisans' 18mm is a full-frame pancake with a fixed f/5.6 stop. It is 32mm deep and weighs about 146g, so it turns a Z5, Z6 or Zf body into something close to a large compact camera. Seven elements in five groups include two extra-low-dispersion elements and one high-refraction element, and the 98.7° view covers street, travel and architecture work.

There is no aperture ring, no diaphragm and no electronic contacts. You set exposure with shutter speed and ISO and focus by scale. At 18mm and f/5.6 almost everything from a couple of metres to infinity is in focus anyway. The barrel and mount are metal and the front takes ordinary 49mm filters.

Reviewer consensus

Coverage treats it as a cheap, fun walkaround lens rather than a precision optic. The centre is reasonably sharp at the fixed f/5.6, but the extreme corners stay soft on full frame and cannot be improved by stopping down. Vignetting is clearly visible and distortion is complex, becoming more pronounced at close distances.

Reviewers agree the price and size are the whole point. For about $89 it is the smallest full-frame 18mm available for Nikon Z. The fixed aperture, manual focus and lack of EXIF data rule it out for anyone who needs control over depth of field or plans to shoot in dim light.

Owner sentiment

Owners like how solidly the tiny metal barrel is built and how easily it disappears into a jacket pocket. Many buy it on impulse as a body cap with a useful focal length, and zone focusing quickly becomes second nature.

The complaints are predictable: weak extreme corners, strong flare with the sun in or near the frame, and noticeable vignetting that needs a manual profile because the camera receives no lens data. Some suggest that a slightly larger autofocus 20mm is the better buy if the budget stretches.
