Optical character
The 85mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is Sigma's DSLR-era portrait lens, also made with a native L-Mount. It was designed with image quality first and size second: the L-Mount version weighs 1,215g, is 150.2mm long and takes 86mm filters.
Two SLD elements, one high-index anomalous-dispersion element and a rear aspherical element keep colour fringing and sagittal coma low, and the 9-blade rounded aperture gives smooth background blur. Focusing uses an HSM ring motor with full-time manual override. There is a dust and splash resistant structure, but no aperture ring or stabilisation. Sigma has since discontinued it.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rate the optics among the best of any 85mm: very sharp from f/1.4 with excellent corners on high-resolution full frame, practically zero distortion, very low lateral colour fringing and only slight coma. Bokeh is described as very soft and smooth with negligible onion-ring texture. The weak points are heavy vignetting wide open on full frame and some longitudinal colour fringing in two of the three tests.
Autofocus is quick and quiet, but one review found its accuracy inconsistent and needed per-distance tuning with the USB Dock, while the others found it accurate. Focus breathing is noticeable for video, and flare resistance is good. Two of the three point to the size, weight and 86mm filters as the price of that image quality.
