The 24-60mm F2.8 is Panasonic's compact constant-f/2.8 standard zoom, launched with the LUMIX S1II. It gives up 10mm at the long end compared with the S PRO 24-70mm F2.8 but weighs 544g and is 99.9mm long, so it suits smaller S bodies and gimbals.
Fourteen elements in 12 groups include three aspherical, one UED and two ED elements. Panasonic's new Dual Phase Linear Motor drives focusing, breathing is suppressed for video, and the lens focuses to 0.19m for up to 0.3x at 30mm. The barrel has an AF/MF switch, a focus button that can be assigned to Hybrid Zoom, and a focus ring that can be reassigned as a control ring. It is dust, splash and freeze resistant with a fluorine-coated front element.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers find centre sharpness high across the range, slightly lower wide open between 35mm and 60mm, and best around f/8. Corner sharpness is less consistent: one test found little centre-to-edge falloff in real shots, while lab charts showed mediocre corners at 24mm and 50mm and poor corners at 60mm until f/11. Distortion and vignetting rely on in-camera correction, and lateral colour is well controlled. Bokeh at 60mm f/2.8 is described as smooth.
Autofocus is fast for stills and quiet and smooth for video, with focus breathing kept to a minimum. Testers praised the size, weight and weather-resistant build for the money. The main criticisms are the short 60mm long end and that the lens does not match the sharpness of the much more expensive S PRO zoom.
