The AF 40mm F2.5 is a pancake-sized autofocus prime that weighs about 90g. Its 7-element, 6-group design uses one aspherical and three high-refractive elements, with an STM stepping motor that supports face and eye tracking, a 9-blade aperture and focus down to 0.4m.
Despite its 63 x 40mm size, it has an aperture ring with click stops and an A position, an AF/MF switch, a function button and a USB-C port on the mount for firmware updates. The barrel is plastic on a metal mount, and it takes 46mm filters. A square hood comes in the box. Optically it gives soft but even results at f/2.5 that sharpen well by f/5.6 to f/8. Flare is its weak spot.

Owner sentiment
Owner reviews of the Sony version are split. One owner calls it a lens worth full marks for the price, with surprising detail, a slightly soft old-lens look, a well-weighted focus ring and fast AF on an A7C II, though they could hear faint AF noise.
Another owner, on an A7R V, sold it. Autofocus struggled to lock even on contrasty subjects in good light, backlit flare was heavy, the corners smeared at 100%, and the aperture ring left the A position at the lightest touch. Both praise the weight and size, and the second still liked the centre sharpness and the metal mount.
