Optical character
A fast 20mm prime for night-sky, landscape, interior and video work. Canon combines one Super UD, two UD and one BR element with two glass-moulded aspherics to control colour aberrations from f/1.4, and adds one ASC and two SWC surfaces against flare and ghosting.
It shares the 99.3mm length and 67mm filter thread of Canon's other f/1.4 L VCM primes, so lenses swap on a gimbal with little rebalancing, and a rear gelatin filter holder works alongside the front thread. The voice-coil motor focuses quickly and quietly, the optics are designed to suppress focus breathing and the clickless iris ring has an unlock switch; Canon says it also works for stills on EOS R bodies released from June 2024. Distortion and vignetting are corrected digitally, and distortion correction cannot be switched off in camera.
Reviewer consensus
Testers find it very sharp in the centre from f/1.4, with the edges only slightly behind and at their best from about f/4 to f/11. One test on a 45MP body found the corners close to the centre even wide open. Coma is well controlled, which makes it a good astrophotography lens, chromatic aberration is minor, and the bokeh is smoother than expected from a 20mm.
The trade-offs are a design that leans on digital correction: uncorrected raw files show heavy vignetting and barrel distortion, and in-camera distortion correction cannot be disabled. Flare results differ between tests, from well controlled into the sun to more flare and glare than expected around bright lights at f/1.4. Autofocus is fast and near silent, build and sealing are rated highly, and the main objection is the price. Having three ways to set the aperture was also seen as one too many.
