Optical character

The third full-frame version of 7Artisans' budget 35mm f/1.4 is a small, all-metal manual lens for people who want a fast moderate wide with vintage-leaning rendering for under $200. The 7-element, 5-group formula includes one ED and one high-refraction element with multi-layer coating, and the optics are the same as the Mark II. Wide open the centre is soft, and the warm colour and smooth bokeh matter more than sharpness.

The Mark III adds a switch that turns the 10-blade aperture ring from clicked to stepless, which helps video shooters. It takes 52mm filters, weighs about 274g, comes in black or titanium, and has laser-engraved markings. There are no electronic contacts, so no EXIF data.

Reviewer consensus

We summarise professional reviews only after reading at least two independent ones. Not enough have been published or verified for this lens yet.

Owner sentiment

Canon RF owners mostly describe it as a well-made, good-value manual lens, and several report good results on bodies such as the R5, RP and R6 Mark II. Owners like the smooth background blur at f/1.4 and the character it gives creative work.

The reservations are optical. Owners note that it is soft away from the centre, and one R6 Mark II owner found a bluish cast and low contrast and recommends shooting with a polarizer or UV filter. One R6 Mark II owner notes that the camera shows F00 and will not fire until the release-shutter-without-lens setting is turned on.
