Optical character

The Loxia 2.4/85 is a Sonnar-type short telephoto. Its seven single elements sit in seven groups, three of them made of anomalous-partial-dispersion glass to control colour fringing. It keeps the 52mm filter thread and slim barrel of the rest of the line, but at 594g it is the heaviest Loxia.

It is made for portraits and detail work where you have time to focus carefully. The 220-degree focus throw allows very fine adjustment at f/2.4, the 10 blades keep out-of-focus highlights round, and the rendering is crisp with smooth backgrounds. The aperture can be de-clicked for video, and electronic contacts pass EXIF and trigger focus magnification.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find it sharp in the centre from f/2.4, with very good across-frame results by f/4 to f/5.6, little distortion and good flare resistance. Bokeh is generally called smooth and pleasing for a Sonnar, and the long focus throw is praised for accuracy.

The criticisms are some longitudinal colour fringing wide open, the 0.8m minimum focus distance, and an f/2.4 maximum aperture that gives less subject isolation than f/1.8 autofocus 85mm lenses, many of which cost less. Its weight is also high for its aperture.

Owner sentiment

Owners praise the precision of the focus ring, the build and the three-dimensional rendering in portraits, and many call it the best optical performer in the Loxia line. It is also popular for video on gimbals because the de-clicked aperture and long throw suit follow-focus gears.

The drawbacks owners mention are weight on small bodies, the long throw being slow for candid shots, and the price against Sony's own 85mm f/1.8. Some wish it focused closer for head-and-shoulders crops.
