Optical character

The Batis 2/40 CF is a 40mm Distagon built around its Close Focus ability: 0.24m and 1:3.3 magnification. It can move from an environmental scene to a tight detail shot without a macro lens, and a three-position focus-range switch keeps AF fast in either range.

The optical design was tuned for close distances, where it is sharp with smooth, soft background blur. It has the same sealed Batis shell and OLED distance display as its siblings, and at 361g it makes a versatile everyday standard for documentary, food, product and travel work.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it very sharp at close and medium distances and well corrected for colour, with pleasing bokeh. Testers also noted that at f/2 and longer distances it is less crisp and lower in contrast than at close range, and that it needs f/2.8-4 for its best landscape performance.

One reported quirk is that at f/2 and long focus distances the aperture does not fully open, so nine-sided highlights can appear. Critics also pointed to the size and price for an f/2 normal lens. AF is quiet and accurate, but not fast enough for demanding action.

Owner sentiment

Owners value it as a one-lens kit: a natural 40mm view plus near-macro reach for details, food and products. Close-up rendering and colour are frequently praised.

The complaints are softer infinity performance wide open, a large hood and barrel for a 40mm, and occasional focus hunting at very close range unless the limiter is set. Some note that third-party 40mm lenses cost much less.
