Optical character

The Nokton 50mm F1.2 is Cosina's modern take on the classic fast fifty: f/1.2 in a 434g, 59mm-long body that balances well on small Sony bodies. Two elements are aspherical on both surfaces, and one anomalous partial dispersion element helps with colour.

Rendering at f/1.2 is soft-edged with a slight glow and smooth backgrounds; stopped to f/2–f/2.8 it becomes a crisp general-purpose standard lens. The 12-blade aperture can be de-clicked for video, and electronic contacts provide EXIF, focus magnification on the focus ring and 5-axis IBIS support.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find the centre usable and fairly detailed at f/1.2 with reduced contrast, improving markedly by f/1.4–f/2, while the corners need f/2.8–f/4 to catch up. Focus shift when stopping down and some longitudinal colour fringing are the main optical caveats; distortion is low and flare resistance is decent for the class.

The lens is consistently praised for its size, its build, and the balance it strikes between character wide open and sharpness stopped down. Many testers call it one of the best-value fast manual fifties for Sony E.

Owner sentiment

Owners love the compact all-metal build, the smooth focus ring and the look at f/1.2, especially for portraits and night street photography. It is often bought as a cheaper and smaller alternative to f/1.2 autofocus lenses.

Common complaints are focus shift (focus at the taking aperture), purple fringing in backlit scenes, and the narrow focus throw making precise focus at close range fiddly. Some users note the original version was joined in 2020 by a cheaper SE model with the same optics.
