Testers found the centre sharp enough for portraits at f/1.8, with softer corners, visible vignetting and some longitudinal colour fringing on high-contrast edges until about f/2.8. Background blur is smooth and the 9-blade aperture keeps highlights fairly round.

Autofocus is accurate for single subjects and eye detection, but it is slower and louder than Sony's or Samyang's newer linear-motor 85s and can hunt in dim light or on fast action. Build quality is considered good for the money, though there is no weather sealing or AF/MF switch.

Owners mostly bought it as an inexpensive first portrait lens and say it delivers flattering headshots and pleasing bokeh at a low price. The metal build and lotus-style hood feel better than expected.

Common complaints are focus hunting in low light, occasional misses with continuous AF on video, and the need for firmware updates on newer bodies. Some users report copy variation and purple fringing on backlit subjects.
