Optical character
Sony's first E-mount fisheye is a zoom. At 8mm it draws a full 180-degree circular image inside the frame, and by 14mm it fills the sensor as a diagonal fisheye, so one lens covers both looks. It weighs only 314g, which makes it easy to carry for astro, action-sports and architectural work.
It behaves like a modern G lens rather than a novelty: two linear motors, internal zoom and focus, an aperture ring with a click switch, a focus-hold button and full weather sealing. The bulbous front element rules out screw-in filters, so Sony fits a rear sheet-filter holder and includes a cutting template.
Reviewer consensus
Early reviews describe the centre as very sharp from f/3.5 at both ends of the zoom, with the frame evening out by f/5.6. At 14mm the corners hold up better than expected for a fisheye, and stars stay clean at the edges with little coma. Flare and ghosting resistance is rated highly, and the AF is fast, quiet and has not been caught out.
The main reservations are the f/3.5 maximum aperture, which limits it to occasional astrophotography next to faster fisheye primes, slightly soft extreme corners wide open, and somewhat busy bokeh. The fixed-petal hood also has to come off at the shorter focal lengths to stay out of the circular frame.
Owner sentiment
Owner feedback is still limited because the lens only began shipping in October 2026. First impressions from buyers focus on how small it is, the convenience of having circular and diagonal fisheye in one lens, and the value of having AF and weather sealing in a fisheye.
Early complaints are about the lack of front filters, the price compared with manual-focus fisheyes, and the focus ring feeling light. Buyers coming from adapted or manual fisheyes mostly treat the AF and the zoom as the reason to switch.
