Optical character
Sony's first G Master macro goes beyond life size: it reaches 1.4x magnification on its own, and with Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters it reaches 1.96x and 2.8x. Two XA and two ED elements and a floating focus design keep it sharp from f/2.8 at every distance, with very little colour fringing.
Four XD linear motors make it far quicker than the 90mm Macro it succeeds, and Optical SteadyShot helps handheld close-up work. The controls include a de-clickable, lockable aperture ring, a focus clutch, a focus limiter and two focus-hold buttons. The barrel is sealed, fluorine-coated at the front and internally focusing.
Reviewer consensus
Early reviews rate it the best macro lens for Sony full frame. Sharpness is outstanding at f/2.8 and peaks around f/4, field curvature is negligible, and distortion and lateral CA are close to zero. The 11-blade aperture gives clean highlights in the centre, though they turn to cat's eyes toward the corners until about f/5.6.
AF is fast and quiet for a macro, and much better than the 90mm. The criticisms are mainly price, at about 50% more than the 90mm, the 148mm length, and strong uncorrected vignetting wide open. Some reviewers also wanted a tripod collar.
Owner sentiment
Owners are mostly macro, insect and product photographers who welcome being able to go past 1:1 without extension tubes, and they say the AF is usable for live insects in a way the 90mm never was. The tactile controls, especially the aperture ring and focus clutch, are well liked.
As a 2025 lens it has a short ownership record. The early complaints are the price, the length when mounted with a teleconverter, a working distance that becomes very short at 1.4x, and focus breathing on older bodies without breathing compensation.
