Optical character

Sigma's mirrorless 105mm macro reaches 1:1 magnification at 29.5cm and is designed to stay sharp from that distance out to infinity. The optical design concentrates on longitudinal chromatic aberration, which the camera cannot correct, so fine detail at close range comes without colour fringing.

It is also built as a general mid-telephoto lens. The 9-blade rounded aperture renders soft backgrounds for portraits, and the barrel has an aperture ring with click and lock switches, a focus limiter, an AFL button and dust- and splash-resistant sealing. It weighs 710g and has no optical stabilisation.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it one of the sharpest lenses in Sigma's mirrorless range. Resolution is very high from f/2.8 at both macro and normal distances, with almost no distortion and very little lateral or longitudinal CA. Bokeh is smooth for a macro design, which makes it a credible 105mm portrait lens as well.

Autofocus is the weak point. It is fine for portraits and general use but noticeably slower than linear-motor rivals, and it can hunt at close focus distances. Testers also mention the absence of stabilisation compared with Sony's FE 90mm Macro G OSS, and that the lens is long and front-heavy once the hood is fitted.

Owner sentiment

Owners praise the image quality, the price, and the build of the aperture ring and switches. Many use it as a combined macro and portrait lens and say it replaced both on their kit list. The focus limiter is used often to tame hunting.

Complaints focus on AF speed and noise in macro work, the lack of OS for handheld close-ups on older bodies, and the size compared with older 90mm macros. A few users report that AF tracking of insects is unreliable and prefer manual focus at 1:1.
