Optical character

The Septon revives a historic Voigtländer name for a 32mm-long pancake standard lens on Nikon Z. Its seven-element Orthometar-type design includes one aspherical and one anomalous partial-dispersion element, and it pairs naturally with small bodies like the Zf and Z5II.

The all-metal lens weighs 205g, 40g more than the E-mount version, and has a 52mm filter thread, a 10-blade aperture and a dome-shaped metal screw-in hood whose outer 52mm thread accepts the same front cap. The aperture ring is clicked. Electronic contacts pass EXIF, enable Nikon's focus aids and feed 3-axis in-body stabilisation.

Reviewer consensus

Early tests find excellent centre sharpness from f/2, well-controlled colour fringing and a rendering with some vintage character; the corners improve on stopping down but do not match the APO-Lanthar lenses. It is judged a sensible balance of image quality and portability rather than a resolution leader.

Out-of-focus highlights can show outlining and the background can turn busy at longer distances. Reviewers see it as a street and travel lens first, where its size matters more than corner performance.

Owner sentiment

Owners are pleased with how small it makes a Z body and with the tactile metal rings and hood, and many compare it favourably with Nikon's 40mm f/2 on build and character. Focus-point colour change makes the short-throw helicoid easy to use.

The main reservations are the busy bokeh and the price for an f/2 manual-focus lens when Nikon's own autofocus 40mm costs far less. Because the lens is new, long-term feedback is still limited.
