Optical character

The Aspherical II is the second Z-mount version of Cosina's apochromatic 35mm. It keeps the 11-element design with five anomalous partial-dispersion elements, two double-sided aspherics and a floating group, so longitudinal colour fringing stays close to zero at f/2.

The update is in the body. New knurling and styling match Nikon's Z lenses, the filter thread grows to 58mm, a reversible bayonet hood replaces the screw-in one, and minimum focus drops from 0.35m to 0.27m, raising maximum magnification to about 1:4.5. That makes it 420g, 60g heavier than the original. The clicked aperture ring has no de-click option, and electronic contacts provide EXIF, Nikon's focus aids and 3-axis IBIS.

Reviewer consensus

With the optical formula unchanged, it performs like the original Z version: very high resolution across the frame from f/2, corners that are excellent after a stop, and longitudinal and lateral colour almost absent. Distortion is low and sunstars are crisp.

The same caveats carry over. f/2 limits subject isolation, bokeh can turn busy against detailed backgrounds, vignetting is visible wide open and focus breathing is noticeable. The closer focus and the bayonet hood are real gains, but the lens is heavier and a de-click option is still missing.

Owner sentiment

Owners like the Nikon-style exterior on Zf and Z6III bodies, the reversible hood and the more useful close focus for table-top and detail shots. The damped helicoid and focus-point colour change make manual focus straightforward on static subjects.

The common reservations are the price compared with Nikon's 35mm f/1.8 S, the larger 58mm filter size and weight compared with the first version, and the clicked aperture for video.
