Optical character
The first Z-mount APO-Lanthar 35 brought Cosina's apochromatic semi-wide to Nikon in mid-2022. Five anomalous partial-dispersion elements, two double-sided aspherics and a floating group make it practically free of longitudinal colour fringing at f/2, and the optics follow the E-mount design.
The all-metal lens weighs 360g, takes 52mm filters and comes with a screw-in hood. Its 12-blade diaphragm stays round at f/2, f/2.8, f/5.6 and f/16, but unlike the E version the clicked aperture ring cannot be de-clicked. Electronic contacts pass EXIF, enable Nikon's focus aids and feed 3-axis in-body stabilisation. It was replaced by the Aspherical II in late 2024.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers tested it on 45MP Z bodies and rank it among the sharpest 35mm lenses available for Nikon Z. Resolution is very high across the frame from f/2, the far corners need only a stop, and longitudinal and lateral colour errors are almost absent. Distortion is low and sunstars are crisp.
The drawbacks are the modest f/2 aperture, noticeable focus breathing, vignetting wide open and bokeh that can turn busy against detailed backgrounds. Testers also regretted that the E-mount version's de-click ring was dropped on Z, and judged the price high next to Nikon's autofocus 35mm f/1.8 S.
Owner sentiment
Owners describe clean, three-dimensional files with accurate colour that suit landscape, architecture and documentary work, and they praise the damped focus ring and compact size. Focus-point colour change on recent Z bodies makes manual focus easier than many expected.
Common reservations are the slow f/2 maximum indoors, the lack of a de-click aperture for video and the difficulty of manually focusing on moving subjects. Since its discontinuation in June 2024, it mostly turns up on the used market or as remaining stock.
