Optical character

This is the mirrorless successor to Tamron's long line of 90mm macros, a design family that goes back to 1979, and it launched on Nikon Z and Sony E on the same day. It focuses to 1:1 at 0.23m, takes the usual Tamron 67mm filters and weighs 640g on Nikon Z. The optics use only spherical elements, four of them LD glass, and Tamron tuned them for a flat field, so coins, stamps and documents stay sharp to the corners.

It is also Tamron's first lens with a 12-blade aperture, which keeps out-of-focus highlights round when stopped down and gives 12-point sunstars. A VXD linear motor drives focus, a limiter switch cuts hunting at close range, a Focus Set button can be assigned functions, and the hood has a sliding window for turning a polariser. On Nikon Z bodies the camera displays the effective f-number at close range. There is no optical stabilisation, so handheld macro work relies on IBIS.

Reviewer consensus

Testers report very high resolution from f/2.8 at both macro and normal distances, with even performance across the frame and low distortion. Bokeh is smooth and free of onion rings, and the lens works well as a 90mm portrait prime as well as a macro.

AF is quick and quiet by macro-lens standards, and the limiter helps at portrait distances. The usual criticisms are visible focus breathing and the lack of the optical stabilisation that the NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S offers.

Owner sentiment

Nikon Z owners mostly compare it with the NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S and say the Tamron comes close for sharpness at a much lower price. The 12-blade aperture and the hood's filter window get frequent mentions.

Complaints are about missing VR, the plastic-feeling barrel compared with older SP models, and AF that can still hunt in very low light at close range without the limiter set.
