Optical character

The 800mm f/6.3 VR S was the first Z lens with a Phase Fresnel (PF) element, and it made 800mm affordable and portable. At 2385g and 385mm it weighs about half as much as the F-mount 800mm f/5.6E and costs less than half as much, which put a real 800mm within reach of serious bird and aviation photographers.

Three ED elements and an SR element sit alongside the PF element, with Nano Crystal Coat and a fluorine-coated front element. A stepping motor handles focus, VR gives 5 stops (5.5 with Synchro VR), and a 46mm drop-in filter slot sits near the mount. With the Z teleconverters it reaches 1120mm f/9 or 1600mm f/13.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers call it excellent wide open, with resolution and contrast close to the far more expensive f/5.6 exotics and practically no colour fringing. Fine feather detail holds up well, and it remains usable with the TC-1.4x. The balance is close to the camera, so it is surprisingly easy to hand-hold for short periods.

The criticisms are typical of PF lenses: coloured ring flare from strong point light sources, plus a slow f/6.3 aperture that pushes ISO up early and late in the day. The 5m minimum focus distance is long, and the stepping-motor AF, though fast, is not as quick to acquire as the VCM exotics.

Owner sentiment

Owners say it delivers exotic-lens results at a fraction of the price and weight, and many use it handheld from boats, hides and airshows. Reported keeper rates on Z9 and Z8 bodies are high, and the drop-in polariser option is appreciated.

The complaints are PF flare in backlit scenes, the cost of the HB-104 hood if lost, and atmospheric heat haze, which at 800mm limits sharpness more often than the lens does. Some note it still needs a monopod for long waits.
