Optical character
This was the fastest rectilinear 15mm for full frame when it launched for Sony FE, and the Nikon Z version followed in July 2019. f/2 at 15mm makes it a candidate for night skies and dim interiors, and the Zero-D design keeps barrel distortion to around 1.4%, low enough that most architecture needs no correction.
It is an all-metal manual-focus lens with a 72mm front thread, a bayonet petal hood and a click/de-click switch on the aperture ring for video. The Z version uses five straight aperture blades for 10-point sunstars, and focus goes down to 0.15m for 1:4 magnification, which allows exaggerated near-far compositions.
Reviewer consensus
Tests show a sharp centre from f/2, with soft outer field and weak corners at f/2 to f/2.8 that become good at f/5.6 to f/8. Distortion is very low for the class, and lateral colour fringing is modest and easy to remove.
The weak points are vignetting of over 3 EV wide open that remains visible at f/8, coma in the corners at f/2 that clears up by f/4, and ghosting with strong light near the frame corners. With no electronic contacts, there is no in-camera correction or EXIF.
Owner sentiment
Owners like the combination of speed, low distortion and a normal screw-in filter thread, and many use it for astro, real estate and vlogging-style video with the de-clicked aperture. The build and smooth focus ring are well regarded, and Z shooters value it as one of the few fast native ultra-wides for the system.
Common complaints are the heavy vignetting, corner softness wide open for star fields, and the lack of EXIF. With no contacts, Z bodies also need the focal length entered manually for in-body VR.
