Reviewers agree the build is the headline: an all-metal barrel, precise aperture clicks in third stops and a smooth focus ring that feel more premium than the Contemporary label suggests. Centre sharpness is strong, peaking around f/4 to f/5.6, while the edges trail a little at f/2.8 and catch up when stopped down. Lateral colour fringing is low and bokeh is smooth for an f/2.8 lens, with round highlights.

The weak points are the slow aperture, native vignetting of more than 2 stops at f/2.8 and pincushion distortion that rely on in-camera correction, and sealing limited to a rubber gasket at the mount. Autofocus is quick and almost silent with phase-detect bodies; on a contrast-detect camera it was less consistent, especially for video.
