Laowa 15mm f/4 Wide Angle Macro (L-Mount)

Reviewers find it strong where it is meant to work. Close up, the centre is sharp with good contrast and pleasant background blur, results at 1:2 are usable even wide open, and longitudinal colour fringing is well controlled. As a general ultra-wide it is weaker: corners stay soft at distance and the mid-frame needs f/8 to f/11, vignetting is over 3 EV in the corners at f/4, and distortion is strong and wavy, which makes the shift function poor for straight architecture.

Opinions on flare differ: one test found it well controlled even shooting toward the sun, while another rated ghosting and veiling flare its biggest weakness. Lateral colour fringing is visible in the corners. The very short working distance means the lens blocks light from the subject at 1:1, and the clickless aperture ring shifts too easily. A newer comparison finds Laowa's 15mm f/4.5 0.5x better in almost every optical respect, leaving 1:1 and shift as this lens's advantages.
