Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 RF

Testers found it sharp enough for portraits at f/1.4, clearly better by f/2 and excellent from f/2.8, with edges a little behind the centre. Vignetting is obvious wide open and takes about two to three stops to clear. Chromatic aberration shows only on high-contrast edges, distortion is negligible, and out-of-focus backgrounds are smooth and creamy. The large front element can flare with the sun across it, so the deep supplied hood is worth using.

On EOS R and RP bodies autofocus was quick, quiet and accurate in single and continuous modes, with face and eye detection working well, though not as snappy as Canon's RF 85mm F1.2L. Build and weather sealing impressed for the money. Gaps include no in-camera lens corrections at the time of testing, no control ring, and poor balance on the small EOS RP. The verdict was strong value: the affordable fast 85 for EOS R users.
