Optical character
The red-ring "R" version keeps the optics of Laowa's 15mm shift lens, 17 elements in 11 groups with ±11mm of shift on full frame, but replaces the five-blade aperture with 14 blades. Laowa pitches the change at shoots with many light sources: the 14-point stars are shorter and less dominant than the bold 10-point stars of the original.
The rest is unchanged. A 65mm image circle also covers medium format with ±8mm of shift, distortion is close to zero when unshifted, and the shift unit rotates 360° in 15° steps. There is no tilt, focus and aperture are fully manual on a clicked ring, and the bulbous front element has no filter thread. It launched at the same $1,199 as the original.
Reviewer consensus
The optics are shared with the original five-blade version, and tests of that lens agree on the basics: the centre is very sharp from f/4.5, but a mid-zone dip means the mid-frame and corners need f/8 to f/11 to look good. Fully shifted corners hold up well and resolve more detail than Canon's TS-E 17mm at the frame edge. Distortion is close to zero unshifted, with a little barrel distortion when shifted, and there is no focus shift.
The weaker points are vignetting (about 2 EV unshifted and well over 3 EV in a fully shifted corner wide open), lateral colour fringing that is uneven in shifted frames and resists one-click correction, and ghosting or flare at wider apertures, although one test found flare resistance better than expected. Handling wins praise: a large shift ring with a scale, a long focus throw and 15° rotation clicks. No weather sealing, no electronics and no screw-in filters remain the main limitations.
Owner sentiment
An owner who moved from the original says the 14 blades give more but shorter sunstars that are easier to use in real scenes. They found no visible loss of resolution when shifting, rate distortion as excellent, and see a true full-frame 15mm shift lens as unique and good value, with Laowa's three-year warranty a plus.
The same owner notes that Canon's TS-E 17mm resolves more across the frame, that focus is very delicate and harder to judge than at 17mm, and that the aperture ring only clicks at full stops. The shift ring works like a focus ring, which is easy to confuse with the other rings, though a detent at zero shift helps. Their Sony E copy weighed 743g without cap and hood, well above the 597g Laowa quotes.
