Canon built the RF 800mm f/5.6 on the optical design of the RF 400mm f/2.8, adding a rear optical group to reach 800mm in a much shorter barrel than a ground-up design would need. The result is an 800mm f/5.6 that weighs 3140g, about the same as the RF 600mm f/4. Two fluorite elements and a Super UD element, plus an extra UD element in the rear group, target colour fringing, and ASC limits ghosting and flare.
Canon aims it at wildlife, birds, the moon, aircraft and water sports. Close focus is 2.6m for 0.34x magnification. IS is rated at 4.5 stops with three modes, a ring USM drives focus, and the RF 1.4x and 2x extenders give 1120mm f/8 and 1600mm f/11 with AF still active. The barrel is dust and drip resistant with a heat-shield finish, and the front element has a fluorine coating. Filters are 52mm drop-in only.
