Optical character

Canon's 24mm f/1.4 L for RF, designed as much for hybrid video work as for stills. It shares its 76.5 x 99.3mm size, 67mm filter thread and controls with the 35mm and 50mm F1.4 L VCM primes, which keeps gimbal rebalancing to a minimum, and at 515g it is light for a fast L wide-angle. Focus uses a voice-coil motor plus a Nano USM driving separate groups, for fast, quiet AF with focus breathing optically suppressed.

The 15-element design has two UD elements, one glass-moulded aspheric, and ASC and SWC coatings, and it leaves distortion and vignetting largely to in-camera correction. There is no IS. An 11-blade aperture, a clickless iris ring (usable for stills only on newer bodies), a lens function button, a rear gelatin filter holder, dust- and drip-resistant construction and a fluorine-coated front element complete the package.

Reviewer consensus

We summarise professional reviews only after reading at least two independent ones. Not enough have been published or verified for this lens yet.

Owner sentiment

The few owner reports are positive. One owner moving from the EF 24mm f/1.4L II says the corners are clearly better wide open, bokeh is softer and the lens is noticeably lighter, and likes the small hood, the rear filter holder and the quiet VCM plus Nano USM focusing. One owner calls it the best wide-angle they have used, sharp to the edges wide open even on distant scenes.

The trade-offs that owner mentions are vignetting slightly stronger than the EF lens, distortion that relies on profile correction, the price and the lack of IS; for casual 24mm shooting the owner points to the RF 24mm F1.8 Macro or third-party lenses instead.
