Optical character
Canon's first full-frame RF L lens with a built-in power zoom, launched as the kit lens for the EOS R6 V. Zooming is internal, so length and balance stay fixed on gimbals, rigs and drones, and a switch sets the zoom ring to either variable-speed servo zoom or manual zoom-by-wire. Supported bodies such as the R6 V and R50 V can drive the zoom from a body rocker, and it can also be zoomed from a Bluetooth remote or the Camera Connect app.
It weighs 420g, takes 67mm filters and focuses to 0.24m for 0.33x at 50mm. The 13-element, 11-group design uses three UD and two aspherical elements with ASC on one front surface, and relies on in-camera distortion correction. Three Nano USM motors drive focus and zoom, focus breathing is suppressed optically, and IS is rated at 6 stops (8 with IBIS). It has L-grade dust and drip sealing, fluorine on the front element, a control ring and a lens function button.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found centre sharpness excellent from f/4 and very consistent through the range, with corners softer at 20mm and tightening up from 35mm. It also holds up well on high-resolution APS-C bodies. Colour fringing is well controlled, apart from a little in the corners at 20mm. Close-up results at f/4 are soft until stopped down.
Uncorrected, the 20mm end shows severe barrel distortion and corners that go black, so it relies on in-camera correction. The power zoom is smooth and precise, autofocus is quick, and focus breathing is minimal, which makes it a strong video lens. Flare resistance was rated below average, f/4 limits background blur, and testers see it as a video lens first, with a price that needs that use to justify it.
Owner sentiment
Early owner feedback is limited to a few reviews. Owners like the internal zoom and the 420g weight. One stills-focused owner bought it for the 20mm wide end, the fixed length and the L build, and was pleased to find that zoom in and out could be assigned to buttons on the EOS R6 Mark III so the power zoom works for photos too. Another found it good to the edges from f/4, roughly on a par with the RF 14-35mm f/4L, with fast autofocus, little focus breathing and useful close focus.
Two owners would like more torque on the zoom ring. One says body-controlled power zoom is limited to certain recent bodies and not available on the R8, and that anyone who already has the RF 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM may not need this lens. Owner reports are still few because the lens shipped in mid-2026.
