Optical character

7Artisans' full-frame fifty is built around one number: f/1.05. It is a fully manual, metal-barrelled lens with 10 elements in 7 groups, a 13-blade diaphragm and a 58mm filter thread, sold for Canon RF, Nikon Z, Sony E and L mounts at a small fraction of the price of ultra-fast standards such as Nikon's Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct.

Wide open it gives very thin depth of field, good contrast at portrait distances and smooth, round out-of-focus highlights that stay circular as you stop down. The aperture ring turns without click stops, which suits video, and it focuses down to 0.57m. There are no electronic contacts, so aperture is set on the lens and nothing is recorded in EXIF.

Reviewer consensus

Testers agree the centre is usable at f/1.05 and that contrast at portrait distances is high for such a fast lens, with sharpness improving clearly by f/2. Bokeh is the strong point: transitions are smooth, highlights stay round across much of the frame and there is no onion-ring texture. Light falloff wide open is low for an ultra-fast fifty, and barrel distortion is slight.

The reports differ on aberrations. One lab test found colour fringing very well controlled, while a field test on another copy found strong purple fringing and longitudinal colour that persists to f/2.8, plus heavy coma wide open. Corners at infinity are weak even stopped down in that test, flare with the sun in or near the frame is poor and no hood is supplied. The clickless ring is easy to knock and hard to set precisely for stills.
